Location: Westenholte, the Netherlands
Completed: January 2009
The Westenholte Virtual Scale Model was showcased at the World Water Forum in Instanbul in March 2009.
In order to make way for the river the IJssel near Zwolle, the dike at Westenholte will be relocated three hundred meters inland. The relocation is a national measure from the program Ruimte voor de Rivier. 3D capacity has been contacted by the province of Overijssel and Rijkswaterstaat to visualize the influence of this plan in a Virtual Scale Model. In the Virtual Scale Model the current situation can be switched for the new one. Additionally, the model interactively shows the influence of different water levels on the landscape.
"The plans for the dike relocation at Westenholte are siginificant for this area." says Rob Heetland, Communication Advisor Ruimte voor de Rivier at the Province of Overijssel. "We have been looking for an optimal way to communicate the changes and their effects in the area. For that, the Virtual Scale Model provides a better instrument than for example flat maps or a few photos that are not capable of showing every situation. The Virtual Scale Model offers an opportunity to communicate all the effects in the entire area in an integral way."
"It has been only a few months since the introduction of the Virtual Scale Model of the area, and the reactions are already very positive. For many people the plan came alive when they saw the Virtual Scale Model. In spite of the extensive digging works, we expect that with the Virtual Scale Model people will remain focused on the end result. We also see advantages for internal communication. It is no longer necessary to plan a field trip for every futility, you just have the entire area on your desk."
